With evidence of tribes such as the Pomo, Miwok, and Wappo Indians, the rich history of this city started centuries ago. The current city was settled in the 1800’s by the Spanish, as was the rest of the wine country area, and got its name when a Spanish Missionary was performing baptisms on the feast day of Saint Rosa. Going with the tradition of naming places after saints, the river, and eventually the settlement was named Santa Rosa.

In the early 1850’s, Santa Rosa was given attention from people passing through in search of some of California’s infamous gold. These people noticed the fertile soil and the beautiful weather, and began to build where present day Santa Rosa sits. The city was incorporated in the year of 1868, and has grown from that point on; becoming the beautiful city it is today.
