History of Vineyards and Wineries in Sonoma County

Winemaking in Sonoma County is steeped in history, going back to1812, when Russian colonists planted and cultivated grapes at Ft. Ross, an early Russian settlement in what is now Sonoma County. But it was the Spanish Franciscan Fathers who can be credited for laying the foundation of the Sonoma County wine industry in 1823 when Padre Jose Altimera planted grape vines at the northernmost mission, San Francisco Solano in Sonoma. Today, Sonoma County is a wine region as diverse as any could possibly be, with something for just about everyone. Sonoma County truly is America's viticultural cornucopia!
